Upholding Truth with Ethics in Writing

In a world where narratives can be manipulated for quick clicks and sensational headlines, ethics in writing have never been more critical. To me, ethical writing means honoring the integrity of free speech while ensuring every word is rooted in truth, responsibility, and respect. When used wisely, our words hold the power not only to educate but also to inspire and transform, offering a beacon of hope in the age of sensationalism.

Free speech is essential and must be fiercely protected, yet with that freedom comes the responsibility to verify facts and avoid manipulation. I’ve witnessed workplaces where sensationalism reigns, with headlines and stories crafted not for their truthfulness, but for their shock value. Such unethical practices erode trust and risk limiting our ability to think critically. As Proverbs 12:22 reminds us, “Lying lips are abomination to the LORD,” a powerful reminder that honesty should underpin every message we share.

I aspire to be a fantasy writer whose stories invite readers to learn and grow alongside my characters. I want my work to entertain and encourage healthy debate — never to brainwash or manipulate.

While rapid content delivery is important, we must pause to check our facts and remain open to evolving narratives. This delicate balance between free speech and self-censorship is essential. Free speech allows us to express our ideas unfiltered, but responsible writing, which involves fact-checking, avoiding sensationalism, and ensuring our words are respectful, requires careful editing that transforms raw thoughts into powerful messages.

Self-editing is more than polishing a draft; it’s a daily commitment to aligning our words with higher principles. Each interaction is an opportunity to remove what is unnecessary and replace it with language that is virtuous, lovely, and praiseworthy (see Article of Faith 13). As Alma 37:6 teaches, ‘By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.’ This scripture reminds us that even the most minor details in our language can have a profound impact when crafted with care. Let this commitment to self-editing inspire us all to uphold similar standards in our writing.

Equally, the King James Bible offers guidance on our use of language. In Ephesians 4:29, we are instructed, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.” This verse challenges us to elevate our dialogue — not to suppress our voices, but to ensure that our words build up rather than tear down.

Ethical writing is about balancing the raw power of free speech with the responsibility of self-editing. It means rejecting the shortcuts of sensationalism and resisting the temptation to spread misinformation. I have seen colleagues choose expediency over accuracy, and I worry about facing similar ethical dilemmas in my career. The pressure to deliver content quickly can sometimes lead to overlooking facts or compromising our standards. Yet, our commitment to truth and responsibility, through educating ourselves and verifying our work, is unwavering, honoring our freedom and our duty to our audience.

Ultimately, ethics in writing is a balancing act between protecting our right to express ourselves and using that freedom to foster informed, respectful, and uplifting dialogue. By continuously refining our language with integrity and aligning our communication with gospel principles, we can ensure that our words serve as a force for good. Let us use our voices to express our ideas freely and enlighten, inspire, and empower others to think for themselves.
