Staying faithful: eternal covenants and daily choices

In the life of a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we, as believers in Christ, make promises or covenants with our Eternal Father and our Savior Jesus Christ throughout our lives. We seek to live out this principle and beliefs. Even if we falter and fall short, we seek to make a change each day in the process of repentance and desire to do what is asked of us. We are mostly all aware that only Christ was perfect in this life, and we fall short either in our personal or professional lives. Thus, we seek change, understanding, and a desire to follow after Christ, even if we are on winding roads.

Quentin L. Cook of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles reminds us, “I encourage everyone, young and old, to review goals and objectives to exercise greater discipline.* Our daily conduct and choices should be consistent with our goals. We need to rise above rationalizations and distractions. It is especially important to make choices with our covenants to serve Jesus Christ in righteousness.”* In these words, I see both a challenge and a comforting directive — a call to ensure that every choice we make aligns with our eternal commitments, that our eye is turned towards the sky and heaven, and that no matter how small our commitments are as such.

For me, staying faithful to my covenants means embracing daily discipline. It’s not about grand, sweeping gestures but rather about the little decisions that, over time, build a life of integrity. One practical step I can take is to set aside a specific time each day for reflection and prayer. This dedicated moment helps me check in with my goals and re-calibrate my priorities. As Alma 37:6 in the Book of Mormon teaches, “By small and simple things are great things brought to pass.” This scripture reminds me that even the simplest acts of discipline can lead to profound, lasting change. Whether it is like water, slow but all-encompassing with time, or simply smiling and saying hello in passing.

Another decision is to evaluate every choice through the lens of my eternal objectives. Whether making decisions in my career or personal life, I plan to ask myself, “Does this action reflect my commitment to serve Jesus Christ in righteousness?” Ephesians 5:15-16 advises, “See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.” This verse encourages me to use my time wisely and purposefully in a world filled with distractions and rationalizations.

Additionally, I believe in the power of accountability. Surrounding myself with a supportive community — be it trusted friends, mentors, or colleagues — provides encouragement and a reminder of the standards I strive to uphold. This network can help me remain focused, especially when faced with the ethical dilemmas that can arise in any career.

Ultimately, I commit to discipline and reflection daily to stay faithful to my covenants. It’s about understanding that every choice contributes to a larger narrative of righteousness and integrity, no matter how minor. By setting aside time for personal reflection, assessing my decisions against my eternal goals, and embracing accountability, I aim to build a life where my daily conduct mirrors the sacred promises I have made.

I choose to rise above a landscape rife with distractions and ever-changing narratives. My commitment is clear: to let my words and actions reflect the love of Christ and the discipline of a life built on eternal values. Through intentional daily choices, I can ensure that my career — and my life — remains a faithful testimony to my covenants today, tomorrow, and beyond.
