Importance of Grammar, In Any Writing

Words matter — they shape perceptions, convey ideas, and build trust. I understand how vital clear and effective communication is.

As such this week I was prompted to talk about how grammar is important and what role it plays for me and the Book of Mormon that I view as holy scripture. If The Book of Mormon contained many grammatical errors, it would hinder its message and could negatively impact readers. Poor grammar can disrupt the flow of reading, break immersion, and make it difficult for readers to engage with the text.

The experience of immersion directly relates to the theory of suspension of disbelief. For readers to fully accept and internalize the spiritual truths within scripture, they need to be immersed in the narrative without distractions. Grammar issues could create barriers, making it harder for readers to focus on this doctrine and teachings.

As someone who struggled with writing in the past, I know how frustrating it is when words fail to communicate what we truly mean. If the language of The Book of Mormon were riddled with mistakes, it could cause readers to question its authenticity as the word of Christ, its authenticity as a translated work, and the seriousness of its message. This doubt could overshadow the spiritual insights meant to guide and uplift. The power of scripture lies not only in its content but also in how that content is accepted. A well-written message invites the Holy Ghost; a disjointed might distract the reader from the inspirations of the testified truths.

However, the Holy Ghost plays a vital role in helping readers understand and feel the truthfulness of the scripture. General Authorities in General Conference have often emphasized that the Spirit speaks truth to our hearts, regardless of human imperfections. The Holy Ghost could still inspire and testify to sincere seekers, even with grammatical flaws, the word of God, and the truth contained within the Book of Mormon. For God is a God of order, an author of peace, not confusion (1 Corinthians 14:33), and His work reflects that order. The polished translation of The Book of Mormon by Joseph Smith supports the divine nature of the text. It allows the Spirit to work more freely without unnecessary barriers and less criticism.

The scripture within The Book of Mormon emphasizes the importance of its clear message. In 2 Nephi 33:1, Nephi states, “And now I, Nephi, cannot write all the things which were taught among my people; neither am I mighty in writing, like unto speaking; for when a man speaketh by the power of the Holy Ghost the power of the Holy Ghost carrieth it unto the hearts of the children of men.” This scripture highlights that while human writing may be imperfect, the Spirit carries truth to the heart. Still, careful and thoughtful writing can strengthen that connection. Another example is found in Moroni 10:4, which encourages readers to “ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.” This promise depends on sincere seeking but is also supported by the clarity and presentation of the text.

As a writer, I know “how” a story is told matters as much as the story itself — a poorly written book — no matter how important its message — struggles to connect with its audience. Similarly, if The Book of Mormon were carelessly written, its ability to inspire, teach, and uplift would be weakened. Clear and deliberate language strengthens the message and invites readers to reflect deeply, opening their hearts to the Spirit’s guidance.

In the end, the Book of Mormon’s power comes from its divine origin and the clarity with which its message is delivered. Proper grammar and structure enhance understanding, support the suspension of disbelief, and create space for the Holy Ghost to testify of its truth. These elements work together to help readers like myself grow spiritually and draw closer to Jesus Christ.
