Chapter 3: Guide’s Winding Game

High above, on the garden’s red-tiled roof, the pelican watched in silence, still and shadowed, its beak parted as if snapping at something only for the wind to blow and carry the bird into the skies above.

The moment Denis and Grønsvimlen stepped beyond the white gate and into the tall grass, the world seemed to exhale and wrap around them.

The garden faded behind them, swallowed by the sway of reeds and shadowed by the creaking limbs of the forest ahead. The sun filtered in through the canopy, dappling the ground in shifting patterns, like stories being told in light and leaf.

Grønsvimlen held onto Denis’s hand for a few paces longer before releasing it with a flick of his wrist and a playful skip. “Alright, no more tiptoeing! Let’s get your memory to shake off its dust nap!”

He bounded up a fallen log like it was a stage, arms spread wide, tattered coat fluttering with the wind around him. The imp turned to face Denis, standing with a grin so large it barely fit his face. “Step one: fun. Step two: more fun. Step three: unexpected consequences as we sing, dance, and play in my merry way. Sound good?”

Denis blinked, unsure whether to nod or flee. Instead, he gave the faintest of shrugs, and that was enough.

“Great!” Grønsvimlen clapped his hands. The ground around his feet trembled. Vines curled out from under the log, weaving and twisting into arches and hoops. Wildflowers burst into bloom like applause.

He twirled dramatically, then struck a pose, one foot perched on the edge of the log, arms raised as if commanding the forest.

And then, with a grin and a wink, he began to sing:

[Verse 1: (Smooth and mischievous)]

Oh, come into my forest, my labyrinth of leaves,

Where the paths all twist and tangle, and none grant reprieves.

You thought you had direction?

Well, I’ve got tricks up my sleeve!

Weaves into a maze that shifts and changes with every step.

[Grønsvimlen grins devilishly, the whites of his teeth gleaming beneath the shadowed ridge of his bird skull helmet. With a flick of his fingers, more vines sprout from beneath the fallen log and begin to curl behind him, twisting and growing like dancers following a rhythm only they can hear. They wind into shifting archways and looping paths, forming a playful maze that reconfigures itself with every step he takes, like the forest itself is swaying to his tune. Denis stands a few paces away, mesmerized as Grønsvimlen twirls among the vines, his cloak catching leaves and petals as he moves with theatrical flair.]

[Verse 2: (Quirky and sly)]

I’m the maestro of the meadow, the gardener of glee,

I’ll guide you through the thickets, but the thickets follow me!

Your compass spins in circles,

And I laugh like a banshee.

[Grønsvimlen hops with the grace of a grasshopper onto a twisting vine that coils upward like a spiraling staircase, lifting him into the dappled light above. As he rises, he pulls a handful of shimmering seeds from the folds of his cloak and tosses them outward in an arc. The seeds glint like droplets of dew in the air before bursting into blooms—flowers of gold, violet, and ember red—while writhing ivy unfurls and sways beneath him. The forest responds like an eager stage crew, shifting to follow the rhythm of his theatrics. He waves to Denis below, his grin growing wider, sweeping his fingers through the air as batons.]

[Chorus: (Swinging and snappy)]

Oh, it’s a winding game I play,

To turn your trek into disarray.

Lost in my wood, you’ll shout and pray,

While I skip along my merry way!

[Grønsvimlen spins with the flair of a mischievous conductor, sending a flurry of leaves into the air like swirling confetti. He skips in circles, weaving through gaps in the vine maze, and waves his arms dramatically at a group of fake imaginary travelers made of little trees. With exaggerated seriousness, he points them down clearly wrong paths—into loops, into bushes, into nowhere—laughing all the while.

Denis watches with a mix of confusion and growing amusement, the corners of his mouth tugging upward despite himself. There’s a glint in his eye now, one sparked not by understanding, but by the contagious joy of the imp’s performance. He can’t help but chuckle as one of the imaginary travelers bumps into a low-hanging branch and recoils like a poorly acted mime.

For a fleeting moment, the absurdity of it all makes the weight of his forgotten past feel just a little lighter, as they stumble and mime confusion. But as Denis stands beside him, Grønsvimlen suddenly changes course, grabbing Denis’s hand mid-spin and pulling him into the act.

He twirls him gently beneath an arch of vines, ducking and weaving through the blooming chaos. Their steps are mismatched at first, but Denis quickly finds his rhythm, the imp’s laughter urging him on. The imaginary travelers fade into the background as Grønsvimlen focuses entirely on his new dance partner, leading Denis deeper into the woods with theatrical bows and exaggerated waltz steps as if gravity didn’t restrain them in their mirth. It’s a dance of mayhem and joy, and for a while, Denis begins to forget all of his current worries.]

[Verse 3: (Bouncy and taunting)]

I’ll sprout a row of mushrooms to lead you off the track,

Then twist the vines behind you so you’ll never make it back.

I’m the chaos in the clover,

The ivy on your pack!

[He cackles and leaps onto a stump with the grace of a bird in water, his fingers trailing through the air as if sketching the unseen world in the breeze. The flesh of his fingers, like the rest of his skin, looked as though shadows had been sculpted into solid form and given flesh—fluid in motion, yet solid in presence, as if darkness itself had learned to wear a body and it faded in out with the entirety of the forest with only his bright perly white smile clear and visible. He moved, flowers burst from the earth in a spray of color, and vines curled with mischief, blocking off corridors of the forest with theatrical flair. The imaginary “travelers”—now composed of sticks and leaves given just enough shape to stumble—waved their twiggy arms in dismay, trapped in looping trails and vanishing exits. Grønsvimlen giggled like a child mid-prank, then swooped low to Denis, giving him a quick nudge before darting ahead with a singsong call to follow.]

[Bridge: (Dramatic and jazzy)]

My maze is ever-changing, my pranks are ever-new,

A daisy field of wonders—or a trap laid just for you.

I’ll shake the ground beneath you,

And watch the panic ensue!

[Grønsvimlen stamps his foot with theatrical flair, and the forest responds like a drum-roll. The ground trembles gently beneath Denis’s feet, as if caught in the laughter of roots below. From the earth, saplings spring up in an instant, bending and curving until they form an impish grin made of bioluminescent leaves, each one pulsing softly in time with the beat of the song. Grønsvimlen throws his arms out wide, clearly proud of his leafy trick, his smile matching the glowing arc of green now grinning back at them both.]

[Chorus: (Bigger and cheekier)]

Oh, it’s a winding game I play,

To lead your steps and cause delay.

The woods obey my wild ballet,

As I laugh and twirl in my own cabaret!

[Grønsvimlen lounges on a throne woven from blooming flora, where the vines curl like serpents into plush cushions and spiral armrests. The petals shift subtly with his movements, responding as if amused by his antics. His fingers, their shadowy flesh textured like twilight given form, tap idly along the armrest’s edge. He waves lazily at the imaginary travelers, a wide grin across his face, eyes twinkling with smug delight as if daring them to find their way out of his ever-shifting maze.]

[Verse 4: (Playful and teasing)]

I’m the whisper in the branches, the rustle in the brush,

The shadow in the sunlight that makes you trip and hush.

Your plans? They’re all in tatters,

But oh, what’s the rush?

[Grønsvimlen lounges once more, this time with exaggerated flair, on a throne of fresh blossoms that curl up like velvet cushions. The vines form new spirals and patterns beneath him, their textures shifting subtly as he moves. His fingers tap an absent rhythm on the vines. They ripple gently, as though to move with the beat. He waves lazily at the imaginary travelers again, this time with mock regality, his green eyes twinkling in smug delight, clearly reveling in his self-proclaimed kingdom of confusion and enjoying his moment of dominion as the forest continues to transform into a swirling orchestra of blooming flora and dancing foliage. The earth itself seems to join in his celebration, not through magic, but through the sheer joy of its impish maestro.]

[Outro: (Triumphant and jazzy)]

So welcome to my forest, the kingdom of my fun,

Where every path’s a puzzle and I’m the only one

Who knows the way—but tells you none.

Oh, the games have just begun!

[Grønsvimlen bows grandly as the stage erupts in vibrant greenery. The music crescendos into a jazzy finale, with flowers blooming in sync to the beat.]

As the final flourish of his song echoed through the forest, the once-chaotic flora settled into a tranquil hum and settled back to what it once looked as if all of the theatrics were just an illusion the imp had caused, if not for the cascading petals that still swept the ground and filled the sky.

Denis stood still, heart thumping to a rhythm that wasn’t entirely his own, watching the last remnants as the leaves ceased their dance and the vines fell still, forming soft arches like a curtain gently closing. Grønsvimlen, standing center stage in a patch of clover that had risen beneath him, held his pose a moment longer—arms outstretched, coat fluttering—before lowering them with a flourish and a satisfied grin.

The imp’s chest heaved slightly, not from exertion but exhilaration, as if he had poured his whole being into the music and now basked in its echo. The last of the glowing spores drifted lazily to the ground like golden snow.

Denis, transfixed, finally let out a breath and gave an uncertain clap. He clapped—awkward at first, then with growing ease. Maybe this was silly, maybe it meant nothing, but in this moment, it felt like home. A bubbling warmth stirred in his chest, faint but undeniable, like something long dormant was stretching awake.

The imp stood tall, hands on his hips, beaming proudly. “Didn’t bolt. Didn’t blubber. That’s a better reaction than most.” He tilted his head, his grin softening just a little. “Wanna keep going? Maybe see some more sights? The squirrels are rehearsing their stand-up nearby—they have a tough crowd today, but I think we can score some seats for their performance.”

Denis laughed, still catching his breath. “Okay. But… will this really help with my memories? I mean, all of this… it’s amazing. But I don’t even know how it’s supposed to help. Maybe if I learn about true names and magic, I can find a way to bring them back faster. Could you help me learn?”

Grønsvimlen’s grin faltered slightly. His fingers fidgeted with the frayed edge of his sleeve. “You always ask that.” Grønsvimlen’s voice dipped softer, his green eyes flicking toward the ground. His fingers toyed with the frayed hem of his coat, and he gave a tiny shrug. “Every time you forget, too.” He sighed, then perked up with a wide grin. “But I was hoping we could just keep playing a little longer before we get into all that boring seriousness. You know, questions and answers and truths and trials. Can’t we have fun just a little while more?”

Denis blinked, then gave a sheepish nod. “Alright… one more game.”

With a delighted whoop, Grønsvimlen hopped down from the clover patch and offered his hand once again. Denis took it. They stepped in sync through a newly opened gap in the shifting forest path, where sunlight pooled in puddles on mossy stones.

The vines closed gently behind them.
