Building Up Through Words and Gospel Principles

When we look into ourselves or the world around us, do we appreciate what we have or how we live our lives? Sadly, most of us are indifferent to the relationships that we make and form over time, either in person or online, and just move through the motions of our lives. We live in the moment, but maybe we are not really there but in our own little worlds.

As humans, we must and have to communicate with those around us and build connections. Russell M. Nelson’s call to “interact with others in a higher, holier way” has never been more relevant than in our digital age. Whether drafting emails, posting on social media, or engaging in person, our chosen words are like building blocks. They can create a structure of understanding and love or become tools of division and hurt.
Reflecting on my content creation and editing experience, I see many parallels between refining a rough draft and refining our communication. This process mirrors the principles in Daniel H. Pink’s To Sell is Human, particularly in the areas of attunement, buoyancy, and clarity.

Attunement is about tuning into the needs and emotions of others — finding that standard wavelength. When I write or speak, I habitually mirror those before me. I try to imagine my audience’s feelings and experiences, reminding me of the importance of listening deeply before speaking, ensuring that my words resonate rather than repel. In this sense, our communication should be as thoughtful as a writer’s revisions, eliminating negativity and replacing it with understanding while remaining grounded in truth.

Buoyancy teaches us to stay optimistic, even in rejection or misunderstanding. Like a well-edited piece that rises above its rough draft, our words have the power to lift spirits. But if the Atonement of Christ does not soften our hearts, our messages can turn into a toxic mix — a deadly poison that festers rather than heals. Ether 12:27 reminds us, “And if men come unto me I will show unto them their weakness.” This scripture reminds us that acknowledging our imperfections is the first step toward genuinely uplifting others.

Clarity is essential. Clear communication is more than being concise; it’s about being genuine and precise in our message. We must choose our words carefully, ensuring that what we say builds up rather than tears down. This isn’t just good writing — it’s a spiritual discipline. As Moroni 7:45 teaches, charity, the pure love of Christ, should be evident in every conversation.

I now think of Bob the Builder’s famous rallying cry, “Can we fix it? Yes, we can!” It’s a simple phrase, yet it encapsulates the power of construction of the mind — whether building a house or rebuilding a broken spirit. Our words, like the careful work of a builder, have the potential to mend what is broken. When we edit our language with intention, we are essentially repairing the narrative of our lives and those around us.

Free speech is a cherished right — a foundation of open dialogue and the exchange of ideas in our modern world. Yet, this freedom comes with its challenges. There exists an economy of self-censorship, where we often filter our language to avoid conflict or backlash. While self-censorship can sometimes protect feelings and promote politeness, it can also limit authentic expression if we become overly cautious.

It’s crucial to differentiate between the practice of free speech and the mindful process of spiritual editing. Free speech allows us to express our unfiltered thoughts but doesn’t automatically ensure that our words build up or reflect gospel principles. The discipline of self-editing — rooted in the desire to align our communication with values that are virtuous, lovely, and of good report (see Article of Faith 13) — is about intentionally choosing words that inspire and uplift. This isn’t about suppressing our voice but about refining it to be an accurate reflection of our faith and commitment to Christ.

The journey toward better communication requires constant self-reflection and a willingness to change. Like a manuscript that evolves with each draft, our interactions grow more meaningful when we continually seek divine guidance. The Savior’s Atonement is the ultimate tool in this process, allowing us to recognize and correct our weaknesses to become better instruments in His hands.

As I continue to refine my writing and communication, I remember that every word matters. Our language is not just a series of sounds or characters on a screen but a powerful means of connection. When we edit our words with care and intentionality, we set a higher standard for ourselves and those we engage with. By embracing the principles of attunement, buoyancy, and clarity while honoring free expression and spiritual refinement, we can create an environment where kindness prevails, and every interaction becomes a testament to the gospel’s power to heal and inspire.

As we strive to interact in a higher, holier way, let our words be the building blocks of a better, more compassionate world where truth and love coexist in perfect harmony.
